Herbal Teas that Support Sleep

I think it’s fair to say that this pandemic has messed with every aspect of our lives.  Sleep quality being one of them.   And as we navigate the stress and uncertainty of Covid-19, I wanted to address a natural sleep aid that you can add to your bedtime routine to help you catch some Zzzs.  I’m not usually a big fan of sleep aids, but right now I think a little external assistance is warranted to help combat the stress, anxiety, and insomnia that has come with 2020’s challenges.

There is nothing more comforting than a hot cup of tea.  And right now, we need all of the comfort we can get.  I want to touch on herbal teas that can decrease anxiety and help us drift off into the land of Nod. I recently sat down with one of my friends, Dr. Shylah Schauer, a naturopathic doctor who specializes in botanical medicine, to discuss the medicinal properties of each herb in one of my favorite tea blends from Steep Me a Cup of Tea – Insomnia Helper.  (Disclaimer: this company is amazing. They support my business by putting my logo on this tea label and providing me with a discount on the product; however, I do not receive any financial gain through tea sales.)

The Insomnia Helper blend has such a beautiful combination of nervines, which are herbs that provide acute relief to nervous tension.  It consists of organic and wild crafted herbs of Chamomile, Linden Flowers, Lemon Balm, Oat Straw, and Valerian Root.   Dr. Schauer was able to break them down for me and explained each one in this manner.

1.  Chamomile. Chamomile is an herb that comes from a daisy-like flower.  It is one of the most common herbs and has been used for centuries to aid in a plethora of health conditions.  It is often regarded as a mild tranquilizer.  Its gentle properties make it great for children.  Here are the benefits of chamomile.

  • Aids in Sleep – Chamomile contains apigenin, which is an antioxidant that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain that helps facilitate sleep.

  • Promotes Digestion - This is attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties. Research studies also suggest that chamomile helps reduce acidity in the stomach and inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause stomach ulcers.

  • Protects against certain cancers – Again, the antioxidant apigenin has been linked with fighting cancer cells in test tube studies.

  • May benefit blood sugar control – Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties that can prevent damage to the cells of the pancreas.

  • May improve heart health – It is abundant in flavones (antioxidants), which help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

2.  Lemon Balm – Lemon balm is a lemon-scented herb that comes from the same family as mint. Lemon balm has traditionally been used to improve mood, cognitive function, stress, and digestive problems. Lemon balm is often used in brain formulations to assist in conditions like ADHD and dementia.

3.  Oat Straw  -  Oat straw comes form green oats and is often used as a mild relaxant and reduces anxiety.  It can reduce the risk of heart disease, and has been known to increase sexual performance…..hey-o!!  It has anti-inflammatory properties which can help with circulation.

4.  Valerian Root  -  Valerian is often referred to as a nature’s Valium.  It is a common sedative herb and used for nervousness and anxiety.   Valerian’s inhibits the breakdown of GABA receptors (these are chemical messengers that help regulate nerve impulses in your brain) which results in feelings of calmness, similar to the effects of taking anti-anxiety meds like Valium or Xanax.  Valerian also contains antioxidants which have a sedative effect and enhances feelings of sleepiness.

5.  Linden Flower -  The dried flowers and leaves on the Linden tree have been used for centuries to treat ailments like the common cold, to combat hypertension, and is also a great for its calming and sedative effect.

Overall, the Insomnia Helper blend would be a tranquil and calming formula for people that are struggling to sleep and want to try natural remediates before jumping into pharmaceuticals.
